Weekend Games
Ohio State was traveling on the road to visit a tough #20 ranked Iowa Hawkeye team. Ohio State knew not to underestimate this team because in last year's game featuring this teams it took a game winning field goal by Ohio State K Devin Barclay for the Buckeyes to pick up a win. This year year also proved to be a very tough challenge. It took a TD from Dan "Boom" Herron with 1:47 left in the 4th quarter for the Buckeyes to beat the Hawkeyes 20-17. The key play was when on fourth and 10 with 4:02 left in the 4th quarter where QB Terelle Pryor took off picking up a 14 yard run and a Buckeye first down. The Buckeyes beat the Hawkeyes in total yards 353-276 but the Pryor had two interceptions while the Hawkeyes had no turnovers. The Buckeyes also looked very undiscplined at times dropping 73 yards on 8 penalties. In the end though Iowa just had no answer for Pryor.
Nebraska had their fingers crossed Saturday night heading into enemey territory. Nebraska had to know they would have their hands full with Texas A&M, especially with freshman phenom QB Taylor Martinez dealing with an injury. The game proved to be close but Nebraska suffered a defeat at the hands of the "underdog" Texas A&M team. Nebraska did shoot itself in the foot with a school record 16 penalties for 145 yards! Nebraska also had two turnovers where as A&M had none. The biggest reason for the Nebraska loss however was that Taylor Martinez's ineffectiveness. Martinez was battling an ankle injury which he reinjusred, he therefore did not play the whole game and was held to 107 yards through the air and 17 yards on the ground. As a result Texas A&M outgained Nebraska in total yards 310-306, and with the penalties and turnovers Nebraska had nothing going for them. A&M however didn't dominate and only won 9-6.

Ole Miss would just not go away. LSU may have been expected to walk away with an easy win against Ole Miss, who has the worst record in the SEC West at 4-7. This game just helped to prove how good the SEC is, because if you put Ole Miss in any other conference they would probably win over half their games and be bowl eligible, but not in the SEC. Ole Miss fought to preserve their chance of a bowl game, but LSU was fighting for a chance at the BCS Championship game, and in the end LSU came out on top. It did however take a rally late in the 4th quarter to come away with a win. LSU scored the game winning TD with :44 seconds left on the clock, not enough time for Ole Miss to answer back. LSU won 43-36 and with a slim margin in total yards 470-420. You have to give alot of credit to LSU QB Jordan Jefferson, who had a career day recording a career high 254 yards and a TD through the air while also picking up 45 yards and a TD on the ground.

Close Calls
![]() |
Stanford QB Andrew Luck sportsillustrated.cnn.com |
Over the weekend none of the Top 10 teams lost but there were a couple close calls...
Oregon barely hung on to beat California. Cal had was down 13-15 and was attempting a 24 yard field goal to take the lead. Cal kicker Giorgio Tavecchio drained it but flags were thrown because he stutter stepped drawing an illegal motion penalty. On the his next attempt, a 29 yarder, he missed crushing Cal's hopes of an upset. Oregon beat Cal in total yards 317-193 but both defenses were stellar. Time after time the Cal defense stopped Oregon and held them to a season low 15 points, but in the end it just wasn't enough.
TCU also barely pulled out a win against the California team San Diego State. Early on in the game San Diego State jumped out to a 14 point lead and looked in control of the game but QB Andy Dalton and his TCU teammates quickly responded with a touchdown, the first of five straight. San Diego made a late game surge though and brought the game to a 35-40 conclusion. TCU had 466 yards of total offense and in the end they came up with a big win keeping their slim BCS title hopes alive.
The Stanford Cardinals were suprised by the Arizona State Sun Devils. Stanford was likely expecting to just breeze through this game and come out with an easy win but instead they were handed a challenge. It took a late game clinching drive led by Heisman hopeful QB Andrew Luck for Stanford to clinch the game 17-14. If you look at the stats Stanford looks like it would have dominated. Stanford had 420 yards to Arizona State's 268 and Stanford also had 15 more first downs. But it proved to be a battle to the end as Arizona State would not go away but Stanford was determined there was not going to be an upset.
Ohio State also had a tough battle at home against Penn State... for the first half at least. Penn State completely dominated Ohio State in the first half and as a result went into the locker room with a 14-3 lead. This game however, proved to be a story of two halfs. Ohio State's luck turned in the second half as they scored five straight TDs, two of which were interception returns for TD's. Ohio State walked away with a comfortable 38-14 win and a chance to still capture a Big Ten Title and head to the Rose Bowl.

Week 10 and Again a New #1
Man i feel like a broken record as once again the old #1 was dethroned to be replaced by a new #1. This time it is was Auburn falling from the #1 to the #2 spot despite dominating Ole Miss 53-31. Oregon will take over as the #1 after crushing USC 53-32 in a game that was supposed to be a fairly close game. Oregon seems unstoppable on offense and it looks like they will have a good chance to win the remainder of their games. Their only two sort of challenges will be at California and home against Arizona.

Iowa Hawkeye isoportacus.com |
Also over the weekend two more unbeatens were defeated as Missouri and Michigan State. Michigan State although they had really only played one competitive team against Wisconsin (Michigan State won 34-24) they had risen to the #5 and they seemed to be on fire. But it probably comes as a surprise to almost no one, except maybe Michigan State fans, that they were crushed by Iowa 37-6. Iowa held Michigan State to 31 yards on the ground and outgained Michigan State 352-258 in total yards. Michigan State also had three turnovers to Iowa's 0. Michgan State fell to #14.

Missouri Tigers eyesoftx.wordpress.com |
For the 3rd week in a row the #1 team in the nation has been dethroned. This time it was Oklahoma who was crushed in the 4th quarter 16-6 to end up losing to the #11 Missouri Tigers 36-27. Oklahoma is probably one of the most overrated top teams in the nation and Missouri beating them really was not a very big upset. Congrats to Missouri though because it was still a big win for their program and for the first time since 1960 they are 7-0
However Auburn will now take over as #1. They have the best record in the best conference in the country but many think that Auburn should not have vaulted up this many spots. People argue that Oregon is unstoppable and should have been bumped into the #1 spot but they dont take into account how much stronger the SEC is than the Pac-10. Considering how competitive the SEC it is still very possible that Auburn will lose a game anyways. But any team in the SEC West could compete with the top teams in the Pac-10. If you matched the top SEC teams up against the top Pac-10 teams on the other hand I would be surprised if the Pac-10 could beat more than one of the SEC teams. So just how good is Oregon? Well the answer is they are pretty darn good but they are slighty overhyped. True their offense scores a nation high 55.1 point per game but that is factoring in games where they just ruthlessly ran up the score against cupcake teams New Mexico 72-0 and Portland State 69-0. Oregon has only played one top 15 team while SEC leader Auburn has played three.
Boise State must be disappointed that for the 3rd time a #1 team has fallen they have just remained at #3. The problem for Boise State is that they do not play in a BCS conference and their strength of schedule is much weaker than that of a BCS school so even if they go undefeated they may not play for a national championship. That being said Boise State is still undefeated and still blowing teams out.

The Buckeyes had lost the last two games as the AP #1 and Saturday did not prove to be any different as they were upsetted easily by the Wisconsin Badgers. When looking at the stats Wisconsin only had 25 more total yards than Ohio State which is far from dominant but Wisconsin came up with points when they needed to and there special teams greatly aided them. The first play of the game was returned for a 97 yard touchdown by Badgers KR David Gilreath.
So for the second week in a row the #1 team has been dominated and dethroned, so who is #1? Oklahoma took the #1 spot in the BCS Standings and Oregon took the #1 spot in the AP poll. Complete Standings. To me Alabama may still be the best team in the country but they may not ever hit the #1 again or then again maybe they will. I personally would like to see Auburn as at #1 but first they would have to win a tough challenge against LSU next week and of course beat Alabama the last game of the regular season. But Auburn looks like the best team in the best conference for now. This season is starting to look like it is going to shape up to be a crazy season.

Top 5 Conferences

#1. SEC - The SEC is probably not as good as it was but is still loaded with 5 teams in the top 20. The SEC has Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas and three unbeatens in LSU, Auburn, and top ranked Alabama. Auburn and Alabama really help to make sure the SEC stays #1 as both have good chances to win a BCS Bowl game.
![]() |
sportschump.net |
#2. Big Ten - The Big Ten also has 5 teams in the top 20 but overall cannot compete with the SEC. The Big Ten does have Wisconsin, Iowa, and 4 unbeatens in Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and #2 Ohio State though. Ohio State will likely play in a BCS bowl and some other teams may also be able to play big bowl games. The Big Ten also is the home of Heisman front runner Denard Robinson
#3. Big 12 - The Big 12 gets the three spot because of their depth and I believe that when matched up against the Pac-10 or ACC they would win. The Big 12 has five unbeaten teams four of which are in the Top 25; Oklahoma, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, and Missouri are all in the Top 25. Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, and Kansas State are all having pretty good seasons too.

#5. ACC - I considered putting the Mountain West Conference in this spot because they have some good teams in Utah, Air Force, and TCU. I also believe that the ACC is loaded with overated teams but they are a BCS conference and therefore have more balance than the Mountain West. The ACC only has two Top 25 teams in Miami (FL) and Florida State but some teams that are close.

South Pointe DE's
Two Friday's ago I was watching a game between the high school teams South Pointe and Spartansburg because I had heard that South Pointe's DE (Jadevon Clowney) was an amazing player. I was not dissapointed as play after play Clowney tore through or blew by the offensive line like they were not even there. Clowney is the undisputed #1 high school recruit. He stands about 6'6" tall, weighs around 245 pounds, and runs a 4.6 40 yard dash. Clowney says he has eliminated his college choices to just South Carolina and Alabama. Below is a link from 247 Sports on YouTube of Jadeveon Clowney highlights

Texas A&M suffered their first loss of the season as they were knocked off by still undefeated Oklahoma St 38-35. The game proved to be a sloppy one with A&M turning the ball over 5 times and Oklahoma turning it over 3 times. That being said the game was good in the aspect that it was close; Oklahoma had to comeback from a 21-7 halftime defecit win off a 40 yard field goal. Texas A&M fell despite gaining 535 yards to Oklahoma State's 351.

#1 Alabama vs #7 Florida
Who is the best in the SEC? Most football fans would with little hesitation reply "Alabama." Alabama sports an overpowering offense with RBs Mark Ingram (308 yards) and Trent Richardson (356 yards) running all over teams. They are also very efficient in the pass game with QB Greg McElroy (178.6 QB rating) and WR Julio Jones (303 yards). The defense however, may be even better than the offense. The defense is holding opponents to a pathetic 9.8 points per game. Florida is also extremely tough though despite what many people may think. The Gators have the 19th and 15th offense and defense respectivelly. They have not had as tough of a schedule as the Crimson Tide as the Tide will be their first top 25 opponent, but they have posted big numbers in the games they have played. However Florida's leading rusher Jeff Demps ( 376 yards) has a sprained foot. This will be a setback for Demps and the Gators. The Gators may try to utilize the explosive freshman QB more in the offense as he scored a school record 6 TDs in the previous game against Kentucky. In the end Alabama will prevail but the score will be close. Im going with Alabama 24-21 Florida

Miami (FL) and Pittsburgh Preview
The lights will flicker on as the Miami (FL) Hurricanes storm onto opponent territory to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers. Both teams had pretty high expectations coming into the year. Miami was ranked 13 but suffered a tough defeat at Ohio State. Jacory Harris threw four picks not all of which were his fault. Recievers were confused and there was miscommunication on routes on more than one occasion and penalties also led to Miami losing any chance of upsetting #2 Ohio State. Meanwhile Pittsburgh took a loss on the road at Utah. The stud sophmore running back Deion Lewis could only amass 75 yards in the game on 25 carries. Now both teams look to bounce back with a win Thursday. I will have to go with Miami to win this game though because I believe they are a far superior team. They at times played with Ohio State and at the start of the game they looked like they may pull ahead of Ohio State with phenomenal special teams play. Jacory Harris is a leader and will likely bounce back with a good game. The problem for Pittsburgh is that teams are zoned in on Deion Lewis and he is a big part of their offense if not almost all of it. If Lewis cant get over a good bit over 100 yards on the ground Miami should easily run away with it. Miami 38-17 over Pitt is my guess because of Miami's advantage on offense and large advantage on special teams. The game will be played Thursday at 7:30 pm at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh
